Union workers took to the streets with city and state leaders in Boston Monday, rallying support for the ongoing writers’ and actors’ strikes that have Hollywood on hold. Monday’s demonstration took place in Downtown Crossing and followed a Labor Day breakfast backing workers rights in Boston where Gov. Maura Healey voiced her support for those on strike.“We honor you and your courage and we stand with you in this fight,” Healey said. “We’re dealing with something that’s not new,” said actor Daniel Washington. “It’s just the straw that broke the camel’s back.” SAG-AFTRA represents thousands of actors currently on strike. In Downtown Crossing, Sen. Elizabeth Warren was among those showing support. “These artists, these creators, these storytellers are raising their voices and they are demanding the pay they deserve,” Warren said. One of the biggest demands from union members has been more pay as actors and creators say their compensation simply isn’t kee...

Worcester community members are mourning after a local teen died last week after he reportedly participated in a social media challenge. Worcester police said the 14-year-old Harris Wolobah stopped breathing at his home on Friday. Speaking with 7NEWS, Wolobah’s recreational team basketball coach said Wolobah had been at Doherty Memorial High School earlier in the day when he ate a chip covered in spice made from hot peppers and got sick. “He fell victim to the ‘One Chip Challenge,” coach Douglas Hill said. “There was a person in school that kind of dared him to do it.” “The nurse basically said that she just took his vitals and looked for whatever symptoms she could find,” Hill said. “He said that he was okay but was not feeling good.” Hill said Wolobah’s stomach was hurting, saying “he was obviously feeling the effects of the chip.” While Worcester police said there was no official cause of death as of Monday, a spokesperson said “it appears he d...

The Mets’ Pete Alonso continues to amaze the Amazins.Teammates and manager Buck Showalter couldn’t help but marvel Sunday after Alonso became the fifth player in MLB history to record three years with 40 home runs through five career seasons.Alonso — who slugged his 40th and 41st home runs of 2023 during Sunday’s 6-3 win over the Mariners — also tallied his 100th RBI of the season, making him the fourth Met to reach that milestone three times.“The sky’s the limit,” said Fransisco Lindor, who joined the Mets in 2021. “I don’t think he has had his best year yet. I didn’t see the rookie season where he hit [53 home runs in 2019] but I think Pete could hit .300 and still hit 40 home runs in a year.”Alonso, a career .254 hitter, has never batted above .271 in a season, but his 187 home runs rank fifth on the Mets’ all-time list. His only year with fewer than 37 homers came in 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic sh...

A day after assuming control of the Washington Commanders, Josh Harris beamed about taking over the NFL team he and co-owner Mitch Rales rooted for as kids.“I grew up with Sonny Jurgensen, Billy Kilmer, Joe Theismann, Mark Rypien, Doug Williams, Joe Gibbs, the Hogs, Darrell Green, John Riggins and the rest of these legends and three Super Bowl championships,” Harris said. “The then-Redskins were the team that everyone wanted to be a part of.”Rales talked about moving to the area and giving up the Pittsburgh Steelers for the “then-Redskins.” The team hasn’t been called that since 2020 when Dan Snyder, under pressure from sponsors during the national reckoning on racism following the death of George Floyd, dropped the name he insisted over two decades as owner he’d never abandon. With the group led by Harris that also includes Magic Johnson now referencing the former name, the debate is raging again over what the storied franchise is called today and should be moving ...

Reshaped Death Valley park could take months to reopen after damage from Hilary

DEATH VALLEY JUNCTION, Calif. (AP) — It’s unclear when Death Valley National Park will reopen to visitors after heavy rains from Tropical Storm Hilary forged new gullies and crumbled roadways at the site of one of the hottest places in the world, officials said. The storm dumped a furious 2.2 inches (6 centimeters) of rain Aug. 20, roughly the amount of rainfall the park usually receives in a year. This year’s rainfall broke its previous record of 1.7 inches (4 centimeters) in one day, set in August of last year. “Two inches of rain does not sound like a lot, but here, it really does stay on the surface,” Matthew Lamar, a park ranger, told the Los Angeles Times. “Two inches of rain here can have a dramatic impact.”The park, which straddles eastern California and Nevada, holds the record for the hottest temperature recorded on the planet — 134 degrees Fahrenheit (57 degrees Celsius), reached in 1913.Officials say it could be months before the park reopens. MONTREAL — A boil water advisory affecting more than 40,000 residents of a Montreal suburb is now in its fourth day, despite being lifted in two neighbouring communities. The boil water advisory in St-Bruno-de-Montarville, Que. was lifted on Monday afternoon, but residents of the neighbouring community of Boucherville, Que., on Montreal’s south shore, are still being asked to boil water for at least one minute before drinking it.The advisory has been in place since Friday when E. coli bacteria was found in the water supply.Boucherville spokeswoman Julie Lavigne said test results received on Sunday showed no contamination of the city’s drinking water, but noted provincial regulations require two rounds of testing before a boil water advisory is lifted. “We’re waiting for the second series of samples, which were taken yesterday,” she said in an interview Monday, adding that it takes around 24 hours to get the test results. If all the samples taken Sunday a...
