A 999-year conservation agreement has been signed to protect a shoreline property in memory of a Toronto man who was murdered in 2007. The Nature Conservancy of Canada announced Saturday that they would be completely protecting the ecologically sensitive lands 40 kilometres northwest of Kingston on Loon Lake. Monte Hummel helped reach the agreement to protect the final piece of private land in a conservation network that spans almost 5,000 acres. The 0.4-hectare piece of land, located at the east end of the lake, is named Glen’s Cove after Glen Davis, a philanthropist who gave more than $20 million to various environmental causes including the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) over four decades. Davis was found beaten and shot to death in the underground garage of the WWF offices in Toronto on May 18, 2007. Florida bill seeks to ban girls' period talk in elementary grades

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Legislation moving in the Florida House would ban discussion of menstrual cycles and other human sexuality topics in elementary grades. The bill, sponsored by Republican Rep. Stan McClain, would restrict public school instruction on human sexuality, sexually transmitted diseases and related topics to grades 6 through 12. McClain confirmed at a recent committee meeting that discussions about menstrual cycles would also be restricted to those grades.“So if little girls experience their menstrual cycle in 5th grade or 4th grade, will that prohibit conversations from them since they are in the grade lower than sixth grade?” asked state Rep. Ashley Gantt, a Democrat who taught in public schools and noted that girls as young as 10 can begin having periods.“It would,” McClain responded. Wild snap franchise-best point streak with loss to Bruins

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 04:33:10 GMT

On paper, the Wild were always going to struggle in this particular game against the Boston Bruins. In a matchup with the NHL’s best team, the Wild were without their best player (Kirill Kaprizov), arguably their best defenseman (Jonas Brodin), a top pair defenseman (Jake Middleton), and their alternate captain (Marcus Foligno), among others. In the end, that proved too much to overcome as the Wild fell 5-2 to the Bruins on Saturday afternoon at Xcel Energy Center. That snapped their franchise-best point streak at 14 games. No doubt the most frustrating part of the game is that that Wild probably felt they deserved a better fate. Not only did they battle tooth and nail for 60 minutes, they had a pair of goals wiped off the board on offside calls. That overshadowed an otherwise impressive effort given the circumstances. After an aggressive start to the game, Marcus Johansson made it 1-0 in favor of the Wild, finishing off a tic-tac-toe passing sequence. He started the rush into the...

Beginning this spring, Major League Baseball has introduced a balanced schedule in all 30 teams will play one another.“I think it should have always been that way,” shortstop Carlos Correa said. “Some divisions are tougher than other ones, and if you have everyone playing everyone, then it evens out a little more. So, yeah, I like it.”For the Twins, that means more games against National League opponents and fewer against American League Central rivals Cleveland, Detroit, Kansas City and the Chicago White Sox. Instead of playing 19 division games against each opponents, the Twins will play those four teams 13 times each.Only AL Central finished last season above .500, the Guardians, which means the Twins’ scheduled might be getting more difficult.“I think every year there’s a lot been made of maybe certain divisions fee...

March Madness at Ball Arena: Previewing the second round matchups in Denver

A look at the second-round NCAA Tournament matchups set for Sunday night inside Ball Arena.No. 6 Creighton (22-12) vs. No. 3 Baylor (23-10)Time/TV: 5:10 p.m., TBSBetting line/over-under: Baylor -1.5, 145.5What Creighton wants to do: The Bluejays endured some tense moments in the second half of their first-round matchup with N.C. State, largely due to their inability to hit from outside (3 of 20 from 3). That must change if they are to keep pace with a Baylor offense that’s among the best in the nation.Creighton has a distinct advantage in the paint with Ryan Kalkbrenner coming off a career-high 31 points and three blocks. But if the Jays’ guards aren’t hitting from deep — guards Ryan Nemhard, Trey Alexander and Baylor Scheierman were 2 of 15 vs. N.C. State  — Baylor can make it difficult for the 7-foot-1 big man to get the ball where he can finish.Defensively, the objective is equal parts simple and extremely difficult to accomplish: Run Baylor’s talent...
